Great Lakes Sea Kayaking Club Purpose and Goals

The Great Lakes Sea Kayaking Club is a loosely organized "network" of kayakers, united by their interest in kayaking on the Great Lakes, in the safe and responsible propagation of their sport, and the preservation of the Great Lakes' environment.

Activities

Safety and Training

The club has fostered a cadre of instructors trained in the British Canoe Union coaching system. Under the leadership of Dave Ide (Petoskey, Michigan) this cadre has tailored a program of instruction designed specifically for the Great Lakes sea kayaker.

Environment

The club has taken several actions in the interest of paddlers in the Great Lakes region. Led by John Landreville (Commerce Township, Michigan), a successful 1989 campaign to repeal Michigan's legislation requiring the registration of canoes and kayaks kept numbers off our hulls. Gary De Kock (Grand Rapids, Michigan) has spear headed the club's efforts to preserve Grand Island, off Michigan's south shore of Lake Superior, by having it transferred to the federal government. We have aided in the successful fight to keep the U.S. Coast Guard from assessing user fees on canoes and kayaks, and GLSLC members have actively participated in the maintenance of facilities for paddlers along the Island Explorer's Water Trail in the northern Great Lakes.

Organization

The Great Lakes Sea Kayak Club is a not-for-profilt organization under the leadership of a board of directors. One third of those members are elected each year. Officers include a presdent, first and second vice presidents, a secretary, and a treasurer.
